A Scholarship is a financial award usually given for
the purpose of furthering your education. Scholarships can be granted to
students for academic excellence, athletics, location, heritage, financial
need, and more. Some scholarships are only awarded once, and should be used
for the first year of college. If you receive a multi-year scholarship, that
usually means you must maintain a certain GPA (grade point average) to keep
that money coming in.
There are different criteria for different types of awards. For example,
if you receive a Community Service Scholarship, you may be expected to perform
a certain number of Community Service hours per semester in order to maintain
your scholarship. If you are on an athletic scholarship, you will most likely
be expected to maintain a particular GPA, as well as devote a designated
amount of time to your particular sport. All of these rules should be given
to you when you are notified of your scholarship. If you are unsure about
your responsibilities, you should contact the giver, or your Financial Aid
Office.
Even though a scholarship might seem to be “free money”, it certainly
is not. You must work hard to earn a scholarship, and work hard to keep it.
There are thousands of scholarships available each semester, and you don’t
have to be the Valedictorian of your class to be eligible. We have searched
the web, and come up with a few websites that will provide you more information
and opportunities to apply for scholarships. Sometimes it might be a bit
of work and effort on your part to apply, but it is absolutely worth it!
